Josh Penry is set to exit the race for Governor. This will leave Dan Maes and Scott McInnis as the sole remaining GOP candidates. The Washington Post was the first to break the story:
Colorado state Sen. Josh Penry (R) plans to end his gubernatorial campaign and endorse former Rep. Scott McInnis (R), according to two sources familiar with his thinking.
Penry's decision to opt out of the race is a stunner as many national Republicans had touted him as a potential rising star (and we had featured him in our "Rising" series that looks at up and coming politicians).
Despite rumors that Penry may become a candidate for CD-3 or Lt. Governor, it is more likely that Penry will not be a candidate for office in 2010.
UPDATE: The Denver Post is also confirming the story.
UPDATE 2: Penry will likely endorse Scott McInnis for Governor when he makes an official statement.

That didn't work...
The geniuses behind RMR really helped steer traffic this time. What are you guys 0 for 2 now? That's a pretty bad batting average. Both candidates that this blog whole-heartedly promoted over the others - Frazier and Penry - have now dropped from their original races. Any other big predictions from RMR on who will lead Colorado forward?
Frazier and Penry are great candidates and deserve support. And it's nice to want to move away from 'old-guard' politics...but maybe the reason Repubs haven't been winning lately is because of geniuses like those at this blog site playing politics and trying to run the party. I'll personally write letter of recommendations for you all to start blogging and working for Dems so you can bring them down a bit as you have Repubs.
0 for 2
Huh?
Since when were "the geniuses behind RMR" especially pro-Penry or pro-McInnis? I'm not sure any of the blog administrators here really had a horse in that race and you'll probably find equal coverage of both. In fact, we were promoting all of the McInnis campaign's posts and press releases (even among much complaining from Penry supporters) until they abruptly stopped posting them.
I can only assume you're a McInnis staffer or supporter who somehow thinks that picking a fight with a bunch of neutral observers is somehow going to help your cause. So, if that's how the McInnis wing plans to proceed, all I have to say is : Have fun with Tancredo.
Equal coverage?
When are you going to add Jane Norton to the 2010 Candidate Directory? How come she is not part of your "Red Dawn Project"?
Eh?
What does that have to do with a discussion of Penry and McInnis?
I said equal coverage of Penry and McInnis: not Norton.
Oh ok.
I guess you are right. I stand corrected. You will have a lot of credibility in being a "neutral observer" in future elections..
Doubt he's a McInnis supporter
I doubt this guy is a paranoid McInnis supporter. Probably some moron upset we're not wasting our time with the 9 or 10 joke candidates in the Senate race.
This totally sucks...
for Ritter!
