Colorado to the NRSC: Stay Away

As we previously alluded to, there does indeed appear to be a plot underway among a tiny group of elitists (namely Bill Owens, Bob Beauprez, and John Cornyn) to silence every Republican activist in the state of Colorado by coronating Jane Norton (who has been absent from grassroots events and silent on running for Senate until only days ago) as the candidate for U.S. Senate. CompleteColorado.com has unearthed evidence that the NRSC is actively helping pro-tax candidate Jane Norton and appears to be preparing to meddle in Colorado's Senate primary.

This isn't entirely without precedent for NRSC chairman John Cornyn and Co.. Cornyn's decision to back Florida Gov. Charlie Crist over conservative Marco Rubio set off a massive backlash from outraged conservatives nationwide. Only weeks ago, the NRSC made fools of themselves in an oddly familiar story from the New Hampshire primary. Cornyn and the NRSC attempted to back Kelly Ayotte, an untested candidate who has never actually stood for election (sound familiar?) and had to back away after stronger than expected backlash from New Hampshire Republicans.

Ben DeGrow points out that Jane Norton's fundraising record isn't exactly stellar which somewhat undercuts the rationale for Norton's candidacy being put forward in some quarters. This leads to the question of what John Cornyn felt was missing from our Senate race. Was he afraid we would pick a fiscally conservative candidate and felt to need to seek out and recruit one of the small handful of Republicans that endorsed Referenda C and D? Given the NRSC's past track record in Florida and Pennsylvania, this may very well be the case.

John Cornyn has managed to accomplish the impossible. He has become an even bigger train-wreck as NRSC chairman than John 'What Happens in Vegas' Ensign. If their intention was to paint a giant bullseye on Jane Norton, they have accomplished their goal in a most exemplary fashion.

Good to see Cornyn step in

Given that nobody else seems to be impressing many people, it's good to see a smart guy like Sen. Cornyn step in to the Colorado senatorial situation.

I don't think Colorado is telling the NRSC to stay away. I think a few Colorado Republicans who have horses in the race are afraid that the NRSC is right and that if it gets Norton to run, she'll win.

That Cornyn's making a move shows that he and others are impressed with the announced candidates and they're looking for someone stronger than the present candidates.

He thinks Colorado is winnable.

Colorado may be a winnable state next year, especially if Obama continues to turn off independents and less conservative Republicans. They will decide the election, not the base Democrats or Republicans.

Contributors who were turned off by McCain last year and Beauprez in 2006 are getting very upset with Obama and his yes man, Bennet. This means that if Jane Norton could resonate with the traditional GOP contributors, she could catchup with Bennet on the fund raising scene relatively quickly despite her late start.

Jane's not only a smart politician, she's married to a guy who knows the game and would support her with good advice and fund raising.

While I've met them, I don't recall hearing Jane speak on the issues. So she will need a good platform and a way to town hall her way around the state reminding folks that they liked her and can like her again.

Ryan strikes me as too "hot" for a senate race. He's bright, forceful and, wow! I"m not sure how that would go over against Bennet.

When I heard Buck speak, I was underwhelmed.

I need to hear more from all of the candidates before I'll decide who to back. I'm assuming they're all good conservatives.

So the question is, who can win?

Norton wouldn't win

UNLESS the NRSC stepped in. She's not a true conservative like the other guys and remember....this is a REPUBLICAN primary. She wouldn't win the general election either, she hasn't done anything big in her life, no being number two doesn't count when that position pretty much is useless.

At least Cleve Tidwell has a bazillion years of business experience. Frazier's been elected and by a large population. Norton doesn't bring in money, experience, anything.

Pot meet Kettle

It's interesting that a Frazier supporter would portray anyone else as not conservative enough.  On social issues, Frazier fits as closely to Democrats as Republicans.  Like it or not, that's part of the party platform.

And then there is the issue of his complete lack of support for McCain last year.  Frazier stated that he did not know who he would vote for between McCain and Obama in October of last year.  I'm no big McCain fan, but the decision between Obama (overt socialism) and McCain (at least lip service to free market economics) was an easy one.  Frazier and his supporters have no room to call anyone else liberal when he himself could not stand up against the overt socialism of Obama.

At this point, I have to say that Norton appears to be the candidate to beat.  If she gets a good team together and has a good first quarter fundraising, it will be her primary to lose.

Borderline absurd

Honestly Hobbes, that's a borderline absurd statement to accuse the sponsor of the right-to-work initiative of "socialism." He may not have been too excited about Mr. Bailout, which I could hardly hold against him, but to suggest that he's a closet Obama supporter is offensive. Frazier is as fiscally conservative as you can find in the GOP, and unless all black Republicans are under suspicion now that is pure insanity.

Only one candidate in this race has ever shown any socialist tendancies and her name ain't Ryan Frazier.

Then answer it directly...

A media report in October of 2008 stated that Frazier had not decided who he would vote for in the upcoming election for president.  I was no McCain fan either; but in October of 2008, I was working my butt off for him because Obama scared the crap out of me.  I seriously question the judgement of anyone who had not made up their mind by then.  Do you really think Colorado can or should send someone to the US Senate who could even toy with the idea of voting for Obama?

Desperation

I guess the Norton/NRSC pod people are pretty rattled if they're resorting to smearing Frazier this early.

Yeah, she's the conservative candidate to beat. Just kindly ignore the biggest tax increase in Colorado history and her gushing over CanadaCare after she went on a trip in the Lt. Gov's office.

If the GOP nominates someone who appeals only to its base

. . . the GOP candidate will only get votes from that base.

Choose a candidate who can win the general election, not just the base, many of whom voted Obama last year.

Which is why McCain is now president...

Sorry, couldn't resist!

I actually somewhat agree with you, and I do take into account general election viability when deciding who to support.

Not with the NRSC

And not trying to smear Frazier.  I actually like the guy, but I don't think this is a good race for him.  He should run in the 7th and build up his credentials there.  He has made some serious blunders, yet still has a bright future if he plays his cards right.  I'd rather see him win a seat in the House and give us some time to figure out who he is.  After that, he would probably make a great candidate in 2014 against Udall if he supports the Republican nominee for president in 2012.
